Lesley Turnbull (b. Scotland) is an artist, photographer, and teacher whose research-based practice examines how marginalisation shapes personal narratives and informs perspectives. I explore how art and visual representation contribute to our social and political understanding of identity and subjectivity.

Working across analogue and digital photography, performance, writing, audio, and sculpture, my practice moves through landscape, portraiture, and storytelling, using experimental and collaborative approaches. Fog-filled landscapes and blurred horizons recur as motifs, revealing gaps in memory and queer histories. I am particularly interested in personal stories shared through images and anecdote, unearthing “queered perspectives” and exploring transformation, invisibility, and self-discovery.

I have exhibited internationally, including in Australia, Germany, Iceland, China, and the UK. Solo exhibitions include The Invisible Lesbian (Edinburgh, 2024) and Evoking the Invisible Lesbian (Melbourne, 2023). Group exhibitions include Darkroom Encounters (PHOTO 22, Melbourne), the Pingyao International Photography Festival (China, 2022), and the Quanzhou Biennale (China, 2023).

I have undertaken interdisciplinary residencies in Iceland, Scotland, and Australia, supported by Creative Victoria, delivered international artist talks, and contributed to publications and research on queerness, archives, and experimental image-making. My work has received funding, commissions, and recognition for engaging with marginalised narratives, visibility, and collaborative approaches, creating spaces for reflection, transformation, and overlooked histories.
